Gas piping is one of the few parts of a home where a small mistake has serious consequences, which is why it is licensed work and why it is permitted and inspected. Every job is sized before it is installed. Gas piping has to deliver enough volume at adequate pressure to every appliance running at once, and the correct pipe diameter depends on the total demand and the distance from the meter. Undersized piping is a common find in older East Bay homes where a line was extended once or twice over the decades - the symptom is usually an appliance that underperforms rather than anything dramatic.
If you smell gas, leave the building first and call from outside. Do not switch lights on or off on the way out. Once the property is safe, we can locate the leak, isolate it, and repair the affected section. For everything that is not an active leak, we give you a written flat-rate price before starting, and we pull the permit and schedule the inspection where the work requires it.

The obvious one is the smell - the sulphur odorant added to natural gas is detectable long before a dangerous concentration builds up. Less obvious signs include a hissing sound near piping or an appliance connection, dead or dying vegetation in a line along an otherwise healthy yard, a gas bill that rises without a change in usage, and burner flames that are yellow or orange rather than crisp blue.
Any of these is worth a call. Gas leak testing is quick, and finding nothing is a good outcome. We also pressure-test lines routinely after installation and after any repair, because a test is the only way to confirm a gas line is sound rather than assume it.
