Backflow is what happens when water flows the wrong way through a supply system - back from a property into the public main. It is caused by a pressure change, most often a drop in main pressure from a burst line or heavy fire-fighting draw, which can siphon water backwards out of an irrigation system, a boiler loop, a commercial process line, or a fire suppression system and into the drinking water supply.

A backflow prevention assembly is the mechanical device that stops that happening, and because it is mechanical it can fail without any outward sign. That is why water suppliers require these assemblies to be tested annually by a certified tester and the results reported. Properties that typically need one include restaurants and food premises, commercial and industrial buildings, multi-unit residential properties, medical and dental offices, and any property with an irrigation system, a fire line, or a well.
