A heat pump water heater does not burn anything. It moves heat out of the surrounding air and into the tank, which is why it uses roughly a third of the energy of a standard electric resistance model. For a typical household that is a meaningful drop in the monthly bill, and it is the reason heat pump models are becoming the default replacement across the Bay Area rather than a specialist option.
The change is also regulatory. Starting January 1, 2027, Bay Area Air Quality Management District rules require most new residential gas tank water heaters under 75,000 BTU/hr sold or installed in the region to meet a zero-NOx standard, which in practice usually means a heat pump. Larger units, including most gas tankless models, follow later compliance dates. Nothing forces you to remove a water heater that is working today - but if yours is already eight or more years old, it is worth deciding now rather than in the middle of a cold-shower emergency.
Nexora installs, replaces, and services heat pump water heaters throughout Oakland, Berkeley, Hayward, Concord, Walnut Creek, and the rest of the East Bay. We handle the plumbing, the condensate drain, and the permit, and we coordinate the electrical work when a unit needs a dedicated circuit or a panel upgrade, so you are not left managing two trades yourself.

Heat pump water heaters have three practical requirements that a gas tank does not. They need electrical capacity - often a dedicated 240V circuit, and sometimes a panel with room to add one. They need air volume, because the unit pulls heat from the room; a sealed closet usually needs louvered doors or ducting. And they need a condensate drain, since pulling heat out of air produces water that has to go somewhere.
None of these are difficult, but all three are much easier to plan when your current water heater is still working. We check all of them during the free estimate, tell you plainly if your home needs electrical work, and give you a written flat-rate price covering the whole job. Heat pump water heaters may also qualify for utility and state incentives - ask us what is currently available when we quote the work.

It depends on the unit, your available electrical capacity, and where the heater sits. Homes that already have a suitable 240V circuit cost considerably less than homes needing a new circuit or a panel upgrade. We give you a written flat-rate price after we see the space, and there is no charge for the visit.
No. The rule applies to new equipment sold or installed, not to units already in service. If yours is working, you can keep it. The reason to plan early is that heat pump installs sometimes need electrical work, which is far easier to schedule before a failure than after one.
A garage is often the best location, because the unit has plenty of air to draw from and a garage is a straightforward place to run a condensate drain. We will confirm the space works during the estimate.
Yes. We coordinate the electrical side of the installation along with the plumbing and the permit, so the job is managed end to end rather than split between you and a second contractor.
